Gary J. McElvaney, a loving, funny, and generous soul, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025, in Philadelphia, PA, surrounded by his adoring family. Born on November 30, 1954, Gary proudly called Mayfair his home for over 60 years, embodying the warmth and spirit of the neighborhood he loved so dearly.
A devoted husband to the late Cathy McElvaney for 39 years, Gary’s legacy lives on through his children: Brian McElvaney (Katrina), Kevin McElvaney (the late Megan), and Mary Kate Wright (Patrick). He was a beloved and playful Pop-Pop to his cherished granddaughters Brie, Maura, and Addison. He also leaves behind his loving brothers, James McElvaney (Eileen) and Michael McElvaney (Anna), along with many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews who were always treated to his jokes, gifts, and signature warmth during every holiday and family gathering.
Gary’s deep roots in his community began with his education at St. Matthew’s Catholic School and continued at Father Judge High School, Class of 1972. He carried the values and friendships formed there throughout his life, bringing humor and heart to all he met.
He was a long-tenured and dedicated employee of the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Revenue, who had been enjoying a well-earned retirement. Whether he was crabbing, indulging his sweet tooth with candy, or cheering on his favorite teams—the Eagles, Phillies, and Villanova Basketball—Gary did it with joy and enthusiasm.
With his famously goofy sense of humor, Gary never missed a chance to make others smile with a joke: even if only he thought it was funny. He had a humble generosity and the ability to bring light into every room: whether it was buying toys or gifts for everyone, or dressing up as Santa Claus for underprivileged children. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during an evening visitation on Tuesday, July 15th, from 6-8 PM at John F. Fluehr and Sons, 3301 Cottman Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19149. A second visitation will take place on Wednesday, July 16th from 9-9:45 AM at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 7341 Cottage St., Philadelphia, PA 19136, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM. Interment to take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gary’s name to the Eagles Autism Foundation Donate Here or St. Bernard Catholic Church at 7143 Cottage St. Phila. PA. 19136.
