James J. Hayburn

James J., age 88, died Friday, October 31, 2025. 

Jim was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, and coach.

He was the devoted husband of the late Frances; loving father of Theresa M. SSJ, John G. (Teri), Jim, David (Christa), JeanMarie, and Stephen (Cherylynn Miller). He will also be greatly missed by his 11 grandchildren: Annie (Don), Jimmy (Julianna), Patrick, Joseph, Luke, and great-grandson, Georgie of Maryland; Christopher, Nicholas, and Abby of Philadelphia; and Liana, Jaelynn, and Andrew, also of Philadelphia. 

The only child of James and Helen Hayburn, he was born on August 29, 1937. He grew up on 58th Street in West Philadelphia. The family moved to Mayfair where he attended LaSalle College High School and graduated from LaSalle College. He proudly served  in the United States Army as an artillery officer stationed in Korea. He married Frances Fee on April 23, 1966 and raised their family in Saint Matthew Parish, Mayfair, Northeast Philadelphia. 

Jim was a science teacher and baseball coach at Lincoln High School in the School District of Philadelphia for over 30 years. He also coached baseball and basketball for many years at Crispin Gardens. 

He loved spending time with his family for holidays and especially their week each summer in OCMD. A year to the day he left his home; two and a half years after the death of his beloved wife, Fran, Jim went home to God

Jim’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 8, 2025, 

at St. Matthew Church, 3000 Cottman Avenue, Philadelphia, where relatives and friends will be received from 9:15 AM until 10:15 AM. Interment following services.
