Vsevolod Arefjev, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2024 in his home in North Philadelphia. This was his residence for more than 50 years. His wife predeceased him.
As a refugee during World War II, Vsevelod settled in Munich, Germany, learned the language, attended school and subsequently emigrated to the U.S.A in the early 1950’s. He attended Penn State University and graduated with an engineering degree. He worked in California for a number of years in the aerospace industry. His engineering activities brought him back to Pennsylvania.
His major nonprofessional interests centered on German and Russian literature, he was an avid collector of books and assembled an impressive private library. He was active in the German Society of Pennsylvania for many years and was an active contributor to discussions among friends and colleagues at the Konversationsabend, the only event held in German.
A funeral Mass will be held at the Russian Orthodox Church of Our Lady Joy for All Who Sorrow at 560 N 20th St, Philadelphia, Pa on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at the St. Vladimir’s Cemetery in Jackson in New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Church of our Lady Joy for All Who Sorrow or the German Society of Pennsylvania
